**Hydrochlorothiazide + reserpine** is an oral combination drug used primarily to treat **hypertension (high blood pressure)**. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic ("water pill") that works by increasing urine production, reducing fluid volume, and thus lowering blood pressure. Reserpine, a rauwolfia alkaloid, acts centrally by irreversibly blocking VMAT2 (vesicular monoamine transporter 2), depleting monoamine neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin from nerve endings, resulting in reduced sympathetic nervous system activity and lower blood pressure. This combination is effective at reducing both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and has shown comparable efficacy to other antihypertensive regimens in clinical studies[3][6].
