Hydrocodone is a synthetic opioid analgesic derived from codeine, primarily used for the management of moderate to severe pain and as an antitussive (cough suppressant)[3][4][5]. It acts on the central nervous system by binding to and activating mu-opioid receptors, resulting in analgesia, euphoria, sedation, and suppression of cough reflex[2][3][7]. Hydrocodone is often formulated in combination with other agents such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. It has a high potential for dependence and abuse. The drug was first approved by the FDA in 1943 as part of the cough suppressant syrup Hycodan[5]. Hydrocodone's more potent metabolite is hydromorphone.
