Overview

Hydrocortisone is a synthetic or pharmaceutical form of the naturally occurring hormone cortisol, classified as a corticosteroid. It acts primarily by binding to glucocorticoid receptors, exerting anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. Hydrocortisone is used to treat adrenal insufficiency (such as Addison's disease), severe allergic reactions, various inflammatory and autoimmune conditions (including arthritis, lupus, asthma, dermatitis), certain cancers, and other disorders requiring suppression of inflammation or immune response. It can be administered orally, topically, intravenously/intramuscularly, rectally (suppositories), or via buccal tablets for mouth ulcers. Its mechanism involves reducing swelling and redness by modulating gene expression related to immune function and inflammation[1][2][5][7].
