Overview

STASIS refers to a combination therapy bundle consisting of hydrocortisone, thiamine (vitamin B1), and ascorbic acid (vitamin C), specifically as evaluated in the STASIS trial by Baqiyatallah Medical Sciences University. This combination, often referred to as the 'HAT' protocol, is designed to treat septic shock by targeting multiple pathways: hydrocortisone provides potent anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects; ascorbic acid acts as an antioxidant and a necessary cofactor for the endogenous synthesis of catecholamines; and thiamine serves as a critical cofactor for pyruvate dehydrogenase, helping to prevent mitochondrial dysfunction and lactate accumulation. The Phase 3 STASIS trial investigates whether this bundle improves mortality and clinical outcomes compared to standard care in adult patients with septic shock.
