Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Xyloproct is a topical fixed-dose combination medication containing the local anesthetic lidocaine and the corticosteroid hydrocortisone acetate. It is indicated for the symptomatic relief of pain, itching, and inflammation associated with hemorrhoids, anal fissures, proctitis, pruritus ani, and postoperative anorectal discomfort. Lidocaine acts by reversibly blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, thereby inhibiting nerve impulse initiation and conduction to provide rapid local anesthesia. Hydrocortisone acetate acts as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, suppressing inflammatory pathways to reduce swelling, redness, and itching. Originally developed by Astra AB (now AstraZeneca), the global rights (excluding the US) were acquired by Aspen Pharma in 2016–2017.
