Hydroflumethiazide is a thiazide diuretic used primarily for the treatment of hypertension and edema associated with conditions such as congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis, corticosteroid and estrogen therapy, and various forms of renal dysfunction including nephrotic syndrome and chronic renal failure. It acts by inhibiting the sodium-chloride symporter (SLC12A3) in the distal convoluted tubule of the kidney, reducing sodium and chloride reabsorption. This leads to increased excretion of sodium and water, resulting in decreased fluid retention and lower blood pressure. The drug is administered orally, has a half-life of approximately 14–17 hours, is metabolized in the liver, and excreted mainly via urine. Common side effects include electrolyte imbalances (such as hypokalemia), dehydration, hyperuricemia, hyperglycemia, gastrointestinal disturbances, hypersensitivity reactions, orthostatic hypotension, muscle weakness or spasm[1][2][4][5][6][8].
