Hydrogen-enriched saline is a solution of molecular hydrogen (H₂) dissolved in physiological (0.9%) sodium chloride (saline) and administered by injection or irrigation. It is not a conventional pharmaceutical drug but rather a medical gas formulation used for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic properties. Hydrogen selectively reduces toxic reactive oxygen species such as hydroxyl radicals and peroxynitrite without affecting physiologically important ROS needed for cellular signaling[3][4]. This mechanism underlies its potential therapeutic effects in various conditions involving oxidative stress and inflammation. Preclinical studies have shown that hydrogen-enriched saline can promote wound healing by activating the Nrf-2/heme oxygenase-1 pathway to reduce oxidative stress[1], protect against renal ischemia/reperfusion injury by reducing apoptosis and inflammatory cytokines[2], provide neuroprotection after spinal cord injury[3], alleviate liver damage from various causes including ischemia/reperfusion and toxins[4], and reduce inflammation in chronic rhinitis when used as nasal irrigation therapy[5]. Its safety profile is considered favorable compared to inhaled molecular hydrogen due to ease of administration and lack of flammability risk.
