Hydrogen-oxygen mixed gas is a medical inhalation therapy consisting of a gaseous mixture of molecular hydrogen (H₂) and molecular oxygen (O₂), typically in a 2:1 ratio (66% H₂ and 33% O₂), generated by the electrolysis of water. The mixture is delivered noninvasively via nasal cannula or nebulizer devices directly to the respiratory tract. The primary mechanism involves both improved oxygen delivery due to lower density and direct biological effects from molecular hydrogen. Hydrogen acts as an antioxidant by scavenging hydroxyl radicals and peroxynitrite ions, reduces inflammation through modulation of proinflammatory cytokines, and may have cytoprotective effects on lung tissue. This therapy has been studied primarily for respiratory diseases such as COVID-19 pneumonia, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), allergic rhinitis, tracheal stenosis, and has also shown potential benefits in hypertension-related organ damage. Clinical studies suggest that it can alleviate dyspnea and hypoxemia without significant side effects[1][2][3][7][8][9]. It is officially recommended in China for COVID-19 treatment.
