Hydrogen-rich normal saline is a therapeutic formulation of physiological saline (0.9% NaCl) saturated with molecular hydrogen (H2). It is developed as a portable, safe, and easily administered vehicle for delivering molecular hydrogen, which acts as a selective antioxidant. Molecular hydrogen selectively scavenges highly cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species, specifically hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and peroxynitrite (ONOO-), without disrupting beneficial ROS involved in normal cellular signaling. By reducing oxidative stress, hydrogen-rich normal saline exerts anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and cytoprotective effects. It has been investigated in various clinical and preclinical settings, including a clinical trial sponsored by Shenzhen Luohu People's Hospital evaluating its efficacy and safety when combined with intravesical chemotherapy to prevent recurrence after transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) in patients with moderate- to high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC).
