Overview

Hydrolysed collagen is a form of collagen that has been enzymatically or chemically broken down into smaller peptides for improved digestion and absorption. It consists of small peptides with a molecular weight of 0.3–8 kDa, making it highly bioavailable compared to native collagen. Once ingested, these peptides are distributed into the dermis, where they can stimulate the production of new collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. The dual mechanism of action includes provision of amino acids for new collagen/elastin synthesis and stimulation of fibroblast activity by collagen oligopeptides[1][3]. Hydrolysed collagen is most often marketed as a dietary supplement for skin aging (improving hydration, elasticity, firmness, smoothness, and reducing wrinkle depth)[1][2][4], joint health/osteoarthritis (reducing pain, increasing joint function)[2][4][5], and bone health/osteoporosis[2][4][5]. It is generally well tolerated, but mild gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea and dyspepsia have been reported[1].
