Overview

Hydromorphone is a semi-synthetic opioid analgesic derived from morphine, used for the management of moderate to severe pain when alternative treatments are inadequate. It acts primarily as an agonist at the mu-opioid receptor in the central nervous system, altering pain perception and response. Hydromorphone is approximately two to eight times more potent than morphine and has a rapid onset of action. It is available in multiple formulations including oral tablets (immediate and extended-release), oral solution, and injectable forms (intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous). The drug carries risks typical of opioids such as respiratory depression, dependence, tolerance, constipation, nausea, sedation, and potential for abuse[1][2][3][4][7].
