Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hydromorphone is a semi-synthetic opioid analgesic derived from morphine. It is used for the management of moderate to severe acute pain and severe chronic pain in patients who require an opioid analgesic and for whom alternative treatments are inadequate. Hydromorphone acts primarily as an agonist at the mu-opioid receptor in the central nervous system, altering the perception and response to pain. It has a rapid onset of action and is approximately 2–8 times more potent than morphine. Hydromorphone can be administered orally (tablets, solution), rectally (suppositories), or parenterally (injection). Its use carries risks of respiratory depression, dependence, addiction, and withdrawal symptoms if discontinued abruptly[1][2][3][4][5][6].
