Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hydromorphone hydrochloride OROS is an extended-release formulation of hydromorphone that uses OROS (Osmotic-controlled Release Oral delivery System) technology to provide sustained pain relief. It is a potent opioid medication designed for managing moderate to severe chronic pain in patients who require around-the-clock pain management. This formulation provides extended pain relief compared to immediate-release hydromorphone products. This extended-release formulation is specifically indicated for opioid-tolerant patients for the management of pain severe enough to require daily, around-the-clock, long-term opioid treatment when alternative treatment options are inadequate. Patients are considered opioid-tolerant if they have been taking specific doses of other opioids for one week or longer. Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, constipation, nausea, and vomiting. More serious side effects can include respiratory depression, which may be life-threatening, especially in opioid-naive patients or when the dose is increased. This medication carries risks of addiction, abuse, and misuse, which may lead to overdose and death. It should only be used under close medical supervision, and patients should be monitored for signs of respiratory depression, sedation, and hypotension.
