Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hydromycin-D is a combination ophthalmic and otic formulation containing the broad-spectrum antibiotic chloramphenicol, the corticosteroid dexamethasone, and the cyclic lipopeptide antibiotic polymyxin B. Developed and marketed by Optho Pharma, it is indicated for the treatment of bacterial eye and ear infections accompanied by significant inflammation, such as bacterial conjunctivitis, keratitis, uveitis, and otitis externa. Chloramphenicol inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, while polymyxin B disrupts the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria by binding to lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Dexamethasone acts as an anti-inflammatory agent by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor, suppressing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators. This combination effectively eradicates bacterial pathogens while reducing associated swelling, redness, and irritation.
