Hydrotalcite is an antacid used to treat heartburn, dyspepsia (indigestion), gastroesophageal reflux disease, gastritis, and peptic ulcers. It is a layered double hydroxide compound composed of aluminum and magnesium that neutralizes gastric acid upon contact in the stomach[1][2][3][5]. Its mechanism of action involves direct acid neutralization as well as promoting gastric mucosal protection and healing by increasing prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels, activating epidermal growth factor (EGF), and counteracting cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibition caused by NSAIDs[6]. Hydrotalcite is approved for use in several countries for the relief of symptoms associated with excess gastric acidity.
