Overview
Hydroxiram is a medical food for special medical purposes (AFMS) developed by Errekappa Euroterapici for the dietary management of malnutrition and sarcopenia, particularly in patients with chronic renal insufficiency. The product is a combination of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs)—specifically L-leucine, L-valine, and L-isoleucine—along with calcium hydroxymethylbutyrate (HMB) and zinc. It functions by stimulating protein synthesis (primarily through the mTOR pathway) and inhibiting protein catabolism to optimize nutritional status. A variant, Hydroxiram D, includes vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and is indicated for malnutrition associated with frailty, post-stroke recovery, major surgery, or trauma. It is supplied as a gluten-free and lactose-free powder for oral or enteral administration.
