Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hydroxyamphetamine is an indirectly acting sympathomimetic amine and a derivative of amphetamine, primarily used as a topical ophthalmic agent for diagnostic purposes. Its main clinical use is to induce mydriasis (pupil dilation) during eye examinations and in the diagnosis of conditions such as Horner's syndrome. The drug acts by causing the release of norepinephrine from adrenergic nerve terminals, leading to pupil dilation. Hydroxyamphetamine also has minor activity as a serotonin releasing agent and inhibits monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), increasing levels of certain neurotransmitters. It is most commonly available in combination with tropicamide under the brand name Paremyd[2][5][6][8].
