Hydroxyapatite is a naturally occurring mineral form of calcium apatite with the formula Ca₅(PO₄)₃(OH). It is the primary inorganic component of human bone and tooth enamel. In medicine and dentistry, synthetic or purified hydroxyapatite is used for its biocompatibility and ability to integrate with hard tissues. Its main mechanisms include remineralizing demineralized enamel in teeth (restoring lost minerals), reducing dentin hypersensitivity by coating exposed dentin tubules, serving as a scaffold for bone regeneration in orthopedic surgery and dental implants, and acting as a carrier for controlled drug delivery in bone disorders. Hydroxyapatite can also be found in dietary supplements as a source of bioavailable calcium.
