Overview

Hydroxychloroquine + apixaban is a combination of two pharmaceutical drugs, each with distinct mechanisms of action. Hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial and immunomodulatory agent primarily used to treat malaria, rheumatoid arthritis, and systemic lupus erythematosus. It acts by accumulating in lysosomes and raising the pH within intracellular vacuoles, interfering with antigen processing and presentation as well as reducing cytokine release through inhibition of Toll-like receptors. Apixaban is an oral anticoagulant that selectively inhibits coagulation factor X (FXa), both free and bound forms, thereby preventing thrombin generation and clot formation. It is indicated for the prevention of stroke in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation as well as treatment or prevention of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. When used together, hydroxychloroquine may increase blood levels of apixaban due to metabolic interactions—raising the risk for bleeding complications[1][2][3][4][5].
