Hydroxychloroquine + prednisolone is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents frequently used together in the management of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. Hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial agent with disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) properties; it acts by interfering with lysosomal activity and antigen presentation in immune cells, reducing inflammation. Prednisolone is a synthetic glucocorticoid that exerts potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by modulating gene expression through the glucocorticoid receptor, leading to decreased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The combination may be used to achieve better disease control while potentially allowing for lower doses of corticosteroids, thereby minimizing steroid-related side effects[1][2][5].
