Overview

Hydroxycitrate, also known as hydroxycitric acid (HCA), is a natural derivative of citric acid primarily found in the rind of the fruit Garcinia cambogia (Malabar tamarind). It is widely marketed as a dietary supplement for weight loss and exercise performance. The proposed mechanism involves inhibition of ATP citrate lyase, an enzyme involved in fatty acid synthesis, which may reduce fat storage and suppress appetite. Hydroxycitrate has also been studied for its potential to prevent kidney stone formation by inhibiting calcium oxalate crystal growth and adhesion. Despite animal studies suggesting benefits in weight management and kidney stone prevention, human clinical trials have shown mixed or inconclusive results regarding efficacy. Hydroxycitrate is available over-the-counter in various salt forms (e.g., potassium, sodium) and under several brand names. Safety concerns include rare reports of liver injury; caution is advised for individuals with liver disease or those taking hepatotoxic medications[1][3][4][7].
