Hydroxycitronellal is a synthetic fragrance compound widely used in cosmetics and personal care products such as perfumes, deodorants, soaps, and skin care items. It has a floral scent reminiscent of lily of the valley and is produced synthetically from citronellal. Hydroxycitronellal is also used as a flavoring agent in food products and as an ingredient in household cleaning products for its aroma and mild antimicrobial properties. In pharmaceuticals it may be included in topical formulations for its soothing effects on the skin. The compound can act as an allergen or irritant at higher concentrations; thus its use is regulated by organizations such as IFRA (International Fragrance Association) to minimize sensitization risk[1][2][5][7]. Mechanistically it acts as an activator of the transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M member 8 (TRPM8) in humans[2]. Hydroxycitronellal is approved by the FDA for use within allergenic epicutaneous patch tests to aid diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis[2].
