Overview

Hydroxylated polymethoxy flavones (HPMFs) are a group of bioactive flavonoids derived from citrus peels, specifically orange peels, that exhibit anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. Developed by researchers at Assiut University, this specific formulation utilizes a solid dispersion technique to overcome the natural poor solubility and bioavailability of HPMFs. The extract is incorporated into a sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC) gel for topical application into periodontal pockets. It is primarily being investigated as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) in patients with periodontitis, aiming to enhance clinical and biochemical outcomes by targeting local inflammation and microbial infection.
