Overview

Remchol is a rectal micro-enema formulation of hydroxypropyl betadex (2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin) developed by the Australian company Cholrem Pty Ltd. The product is designed to target and remove cholesterol and lipid plaques from arterial walls, with the primary goal of treating and reversing atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Its mechanism of action relies on the cyclodextrin's ring-shaped hydrophobic cavity, which traps cholesterol molecules and facilitates their removal from arterial deposits. By utilizing a nightly rectal administration route, Remchol is intended to bypass first-pass metabolism, allowing for direct absorption into the systemic circulation. In July 2024, the U.S. FDA issued a warning letter to Cholrem, classifying Remchol as an unapproved new drug and misbranded product, a status that the company has publicly disputed.
