Overview
Hydroxypropyl guar (HP-guar) is a semi-synthetic derivative of guar gum, a galactomannan polysaccharide. It is widely utilized in the pharmaceutical industry as a thickening agent, stabilizer, and lubricant, most notably in ophthalmic formulations for dry eye. In the specific context of a Phase 4 clinical trial conducted by the Universidad de Granada (NCT03114501), hydroxypropyl guar was formulated as a gel to serve as a sham comparator (placebo) against a 0.8% hyaluronic acid gel. The study aimed to evaluate the adjunctive clinical and biochemical effects of hyaluronic acid in the treatment of peri-implantitis, using the HP-guar gel to maintain blinding while providing a physically similar but pharmacologically inert application to the peri-implant site.
