Overview

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose E15 is a specific grade of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), a semisynthetic, inert, and viscoelastic polymer derived from cellulose. It is widely utilized in the pharmaceutical industry as an excipient, functioning as a film-forming agent, binder, and a controlled-release component in oral solid preparations, where it enhances stability, dissolution rates, and water retention. Additionally, it serves as an active ingredient in ophthalmic solutions, commonly known as artificial tears, to alleviate symptoms of dry eyes by lubricating the ocular surface and stabilizing the tear film. The "E15" designation refers to its viscosity grade, typically around 15 mPa·s or 15 cP.
