Hydroxytyrosol is a naturally occurring phenolic phytochemical found primarily in olives and extra virgin olive oil. It is recognized for its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as potential anticancer and cardioprotective effects[1][2][4]. Mechanistically, hydroxytyrosol acts by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), regulating the intracellular redox state, inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LOX) enzymes involved in inflammation, and modulating key cellular pathways such as AMPK/FOXO3a and PI3K/AKT/mTOR[2][6]. These actions contribute to its ability to protect low-density lipoproteins from oxidation—an effect highlighted by the European Food Safety Authority for cardiovascular risk reduction[4]. Hydroxytyrosol has been investigated in clinical trials for disease prevention, including breast cancer[3], but is primarily used as a dietary supplement or nutraceutical ingredient rather than a pharmaceutical drug.
