Overview

Hydroxyzine is a first-generation antihistamine in the piperazine class. It is used to treat itching caused by allergic skin reactions and as an anxiolytic for anxiety and tension in adults and children. Hydroxyzine also serves as a sedative before and after general anesthesia and can be used to manage nausea or vomiting. Its mechanism of action involves blocking histamine H1 receptor (antagonism), thereby reducing allergic symptoms such as itching; it also decreases activity in the central nervous system leading to its sedative and anxiolytic effects. Hydroxyzine was first developed by Union Chimique Belge in 1956 and later approved for sale by Pfizer[1][2][7].
