HyFIVE

HyFIVE is a sodium hyaluronate-based viscosupplement indicated for the treatment of pain in osteoarthritis of the knee in patients who have failed to respond adequately to conservative non-pharmacologic therapy and simple analgesics. Developed by Fidia Farmaceutici, it consists of a highly purified, high molecular weight fraction of sodium hyaluronate, typically derived from rooster combs. The product is administered via intra-articular injection, usually as a series of five weekly injections. Its primary mechanism of action is the restoration of the viscoelastic properties of the synovial fluid, which acts as a lubricant and shock absorber within the joint. By replenishing the hyaluronic acid content, HyFIVE reduces mechanical friction and stress on the articular cartilage, thereby alleviating pain and improving joint mobility. Additionally, sodium hyaluronate may interact with biological targets such as the CD44 receptor to modulate inflammatory pathways and stimulate endogenous hyaluronan production.
