Hylach 1 is a lactose-modified hyaluronic acid (HA) molecule designed to exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, specifically targeting the pathophysiology of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). By functionalizing the HA backbone with lactose residues, the molecule gains a high binding affinity for Galectin-3 (Gal-3), a protein that plays a critical role in the progression of chronic inflammation and tissue remodeling. In preclinical in vitro models using primary human bronchial fibroblasts from smokers, Hylach 1 has demonstrated the ability to significantly downregulate the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α) and matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3), while also reducing the generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). This modified polysaccharide represents a targeted approach to mitigating the inflammatory cascade in the lungs of patients with stable or exacerbated COPD.
