Overview

HYLACH 2 is a lactose-modified hyaluronic acid (HA) derivative specifically engineered for the treatment of chronic inflammatory airway diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It consists of a hyaluronic acid polymer backbone chemically functionalized with lactose residues, typically at a 20% degree of substitution. This modification allows the molecule to act as an antagonist of galectins, particularly Galectin-3 (Gal-3), which are known to promote inflammation and oxidative stress in the lungs. In preclinical studies using primary human bronchial fibroblasts from smokers, HYLACH 2 has demonstrated potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, including the downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α) and matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3), as well as a significant reduction in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels.
