Hylach 3 (also known as HYLACH 30%) is a lactose-modified hyaluronic acid derivative developed for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, specifically targeting Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The molecule consists of a hyaluronic acid backbone functionalized with lactose residues (approximately 30% lactosylation), which enables it to act as a ligand for galectins, particularly Galectin-3 (Gal-3). By binding to the carbohydrate-recognition domain of Gal-3, Hylach 3 inhibits the pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic signaling pathways associated with this protein. Research on primary bronchial fibroblasts from smokers has demonstrated that Hylach 3 significantly reduces the gene expression and secretion of inflammatory mediators such as IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and Matrix Metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3), while also mitigating oxidative stress by decreasing intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. The hyaluronic acid backbone also allows for potential interaction with CD44 receptors, while the lactose modification specifically targets the galectin-mediated pathways prevalent in chronic lung inflammation and fibrosis.
