Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hylan GF-20 is an elastoviscous, high molecular weight fluid composed of chemically crosslinked hylan A and hylan B polymers derived from hyaluronan (sodium hyaluronate), which itself is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in joint synovial fluid. Hylans are produced from chicken combs. Hylan GF-20 acts as a viscosupplementation agent by mimicking the natural synovial fluid in the knee joint, providing lubrication and shock absorption. This helps reduce pain and improve mobility in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee who have not responded adequately to conservative non-pharmacologic therapy or simple analgesics such as acetaminophen. The product is administered via intra-articular injection directly into the affected knee joint[1][2][3][4][5].
