Overview

Hymenoclea salsola pollen is a non-standardized allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the *Hymenoclea salsola* plant, commonly known as burrobrush or cheeseweed. Marketed by Greer Laboratories under the brand name Burrobrush, it is used for both the diagnosis and treatment of immediate hypersensitivity (Type I) allergies. For diagnostic purposes, it is used in skin testing (percutaneous or intradermal) to identify patients with specific IgE-mediated sensitivity to the plant's allergens. For therapeutic use, it is administered via subcutaneous immunotherapy (allergy shots) to induce immunological tolerance. The extract works by modulating the immune system's response to the allergen, typically shifting the balance from a Th2-mediated allergic response toward a Th1-mediated or regulatory T-cell response, thereby reducing clinical symptoms upon subsequent natural exposure.
