Overview

Hyoscine butylbromide is an anticholinergic and antispasmodic pharmaceutical drug used to relieve pain and discomfort caused by smooth muscle spasms in the gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, and other organs. It works primarily as a competitive antagonist at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, leading to relaxation of smooth muscle. This action helps alleviate abdominal pain associated with conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, diverticular disease, esophageal spasms, bladder spasms, biliary colic, and renal colic. It is also used to reduce excessive respiratory secretions at the end of life. The drug can be administered orally (tablets), rectally (suppositories), or by injection (intramuscular or intravenous)[1][2][4][5].
