Overview

Hyoscyamine is a naturally occurring tropane alkaloid and anticholinergic agent found in plants of the Solanaceae family such as henbane and Atropa belladonna. It is used to control symptoms associated with gastrointestinal disorders (such as irritable bowel syndrome, peptic ulcer disease, diverticulitis), bladder spasms, pancreatitis, colic (renal and biliary), cystitis, and to reduce secretions in conditions like rhinitis or excessive salivation. It may also be used for certain heart conditions and to help control symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Hyoscyamine acts by competitively antagonizing muscarinic acetylcholine receptors throughout the body—including smooth muscle (reducing peristalsis), cardiac tissue (increasing heart rate), exocrine glands (decreasing secretions), and the central nervous system—resulting in decreased motility of the GI tract and reduced glandular secretions[1][2][3][5][6]. It is twice as potent as atropine[6].
