Overview

Hyperbaric lidocaine is an intrathecal **5% lidocaine hydrochloride and 7.5% dextrose** sterile solution used to induce spinal anesthesia. Lidocaine is an amide local anesthetic that reversibly blocks voltage-gated sodium channels in neuronal membranes, preventing action-potential initiation and propagation and thereby producing sensory, motor, and autonomic blockade. Dextrose makes the solution hyperbaric relative to cerebrospinal fluid, allowing anesthetic spread to be influenced by patient positioning. The labeled formulation contains 50 mg/mL lidocaine hydrochloride and 75 mg/mL dextrose and is indicated for spinal anesthesia; it has also been studied in a randomized trial for adults undergoing cystoscopy.
