Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment where a patient breathes 100% oxygen while inside a pressurized chamber at levels greater than one atmosphere absolute (ATA). In the specific context of the Restorix Research Institute study (NCT01605110), HBOT was evaluated for its efficacy in reducing edema (swelling) and ecchymosis (bruising) following upper eyelid blepharoplasty. The protocol involved a single pre-operative and a single post-operative session at 2.0 ATA for 90 minutes. The therapy works by significantly increasing the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood plasma, which enhances tissue oxygenation, promotes collagen synthesis, reduces inflammation, and induces hyperoxic vasoconstriction to limit fluid extravasation and swelling.
