Overview

HyperHAES is a hypertonic-isooncotic solution designed for small-volume resuscitation in the initial treatment of acute hypovolemia and hemorrhagic shock. It contains 6% hydroxyethyl starch (HES 200/0.5) and 7.2% sodium chloride. The hypertonic sodium chloride component creates a significant osmotic gradient that rapidly mobilizes endogenous water from the intracellular and interstitial spaces into the intravascular compartment, resulting in a swift increase in plasma volume. The hydroxyethyl starch component provides the necessary oncotic pressure to sustain this volume expansion by slowing the redistribution of the infused fluid back into the extravascular space. This approach allows for rapid hemodynamic stabilization using a small infusion volume (typically 250 ml), which is particularly advantageous in emergency settings before definitive volume replacement can be initiated. Developed and manufactured by Fresenius Kabi, HyperHAES is primarily indicated for the immediate management of shock where rapid volume expansion is critical.
