Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hyperici extractum oleosum vagitories is an investigational botanical vaginal suppository containing an oil extract of St. John's Wort (*Hypericum perforatum*). Developed by the University of Sarajevo, this formulation is primarily indicated for the treatment of non-specific vaginitis and vaginal inflammation. The therapeutic efficacy of St. John's Wort oil is attributed to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties, largely mediated by active constituents such as hyperforin and hypericin. Hyperforin acts as an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), thereby reducing the production of pro-inflammatory mediators. The product has been evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial comparing its effectiveness against other herbal preparations (such as Tea Tree Oil and Shepherd's Purse) and probiotics in both reproductive-age and postmenopausal women.
