Overview

Hypericum extract WS 5572 is a standardized herbal preparation derived from the flowering tops of *Hypericum perforatum* (St. John’s wort). It is produced using a specific extraction process with ethanol as the solvent (60% ethanol; drug-extract ratio of approximately 2.5–5:1) and is standardized to contain about 4–5% hyperforin, one of its main active constituents[9][2]. The preparation also contains other bioactive compounds such as hypericin and various flavonoids. WS 5572 has been clinically studied for its efficacy in treating mild to moderate major depressive disorder. In randomized, double-blind clinical trials, it demonstrated significant antidepressant effects compared to placebo, with improvements observed on standard depression rating scales such as the Hamilton Depression Scale[3][6]. The mechanism of action is believed to involve inhibition of the reuptake of neurotransmitters including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine in the central nervous system—primarily attributed to hyperforin content—as well as possible modulation of GABAergic and glutamatergic systems[2]. The product has shown good tolerability with few adverse effects when used at recommended dosages but can interact significantly with other medications due to induction of cytochrome P450 enzymes[1][9].
