Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Hypericum perforatum apolar extract** is a specific extract of Hypericum perforatum, commonly known as St. John’s wort, obtained using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) extraction. Unlike total or polar extracts, the apolar extract is enriched in non-polar constituents and formulated for oral administration. In preclinical studies, this formulation demonstrated improved biological activity in reducing β-amyloid (Aβ) pathology in Alzheimer's disease animal models relative to other extract types. Mechanistically, it exhibits neuroprotective effects, at least in part, via activation of ABC transporters (like ABCC1 and ABCB1) implicated in the clearance of neurotoxic molecules from the central nervous system. Apolar extracts are also linked to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions and may influence multiple cellular pathways due to their complex phytochemical composition.
