Hypericum perforatum lipophilic extract is a petroleum ether-prepared extract derived from St. John's wort (*Hypericum perforatum L.*). Unlike standard methanolic extracts that contain hypericins, this lipophilic fraction is characterized by the presence of fat-soluble compounds such as hyperforin and the absence of hypericins. Preclinical research has demonstrated that the extract exerts significant cytotoxic and antiproliferative activity against urinary bladder tumor cells, specifically the T24 and NBT-II cell lines, by inducing apoptosis. Studies indicate that while hyperforin is a bioactive component, it does not fully account for the extract's total cytotoxicity, suggesting a synergistic effect among multiple lipophilic constituents. Additionally, the lipophilic portion of the plant has been noted to possess immunosuppressive properties on cellular and humoral immune responses, distinguishing it from the immunostimulating polyphenol fractions. It is primarily utilized as a research compound in academic settings.
