Overview

Hyperinsulinemic, euglycemic infusion, also known as the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp, is a gold-standard research intervention used to quantify insulin sensitivity and metabolic function. The procedure involves the continuous intravenous infusion of exogenous insulin to achieve a steady-state of hyperinsulinemia, which suppresses endogenous glucose production and stimulates peripheral glucose uptake. Simultaneously, a variable-rate glucose (dextrose) infusion is administered to maintain blood glucose levels within a normal range (euglycemia). The rate of glucose required to maintain this balance (the glucose infusion rate or GIR) serves as a direct measure of the body's sensitivity to insulin. In clinical research, such as studies conducted by the University of Missouri, this technique is employed to investigate physiological responses like blood flow and sympathetic nervous system activity in conditions such as obesity.
