Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hyperosmolar saline solution (commonly referred to as hypertonic saline) is a concentrated solution of sodium chloride in water, typically containing concentrations of NaCl greater than the physiological 0.9%. It is widely used in clinical practice as an osmotic agent and electrolyte replenisher. When administered intravenously, it creates an osmotic gradient that draws water from the intracellular and interstitial spaces into the intravascular compartment, making it highly effective for reducing cerebral edema and lowering intracranial pressure in patients with traumatic brain injury or stroke, as well as correcting severe hyponatremia. When administered via inhalation, it draws water into the airway surface liquid, thinning thick mucus and improving mucociliary clearance in patients with cystic fibrosis or bronchiolitis. It is also used in ophthalmic formulations to relieve corneal edema.
