Hyperoxygenated fatty acids (HOFA) are a topical formulation, most notably marketed under the brand name Mepentol, used for the prevention and treatment of Stage I pressure ulcers (pressure injuries). Developed by Laboratorios Bama-Geve, the product is composed of a blend of essential fatty acids—primarily linoleic acid, along with gamma-linolenic, oleic, palmitic, stearic, palmitoleic, arachidonic, and eicosenoic acids—that have been subjected to an oxidative process. This formulation often includes plant extracts such as *Equisetum arvense* (horsetail) and *Hypericum perforatum* (St. John's Wort). The therapeutic effect is achieved by reinforcing the skin's epidermal barrier, promoting keratinocyte renewal, restoring capillary microcirculation to combat ischemia, and neutralizing oxygen free radicals produced during reactive hyperemia. It is specifically indicated for at-risk populations, including immobilized, malnourished, or elderly patients in both hospital and primary care settings.
