Overview

Hypertonic saline and isotonic saline are two different sodium chloride solutions used in medical settings for various purposes. **Hypertonic Saline**: Hypertonic saline solutions contain a higher concentration of sodium chloride than normally found in plasma. Common concentrations include 3% NaCl (513 mEq/L of sodium and chloride) and 5% NaCl (855 mEq/L of sodium and chloride). These solutions draw fluid from the intracellular space into the extracellular and intravascular spaces. Hypertonic saline is primarily used for treating severe hyponatremia, reducing intracranial pressure in conditions causing acute intracranial hypertension, and treating cerebral edema. It's also used in respiratory conditions like cystic fibrosis to hydrate thick secretions. **Isotonic Saline**: Isotonic saline (0.9% NaCl), also known as normal saline, has a concentration similar to that of body fluids. It's used as a source of water and electrolytes, for fluid replacement, and as a vehicle for medication administration. In nasal irrigation, isotonic saline has been shown to improve mucociliary clearance in conditions like allergic rhinitis and acute sinusitis.
