Overview

Hyphanox is a 200 mg tablet formulation of the triazole antifungal agent itraconazole, developed using proprietary Meltrex technology to enhance the solubility and bioavailability of the active ingredient. It was primarily developed for the treatment of fungal infections, specifically onychomycosis (nail fungus) and vaginal candidiasis. The drug functions as a 14-alpha demethylase inhibitor, targeting the fungal cytochrome P-450-dependent enzyme (CYP51) to block the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. Originally developed by Barrier Therapeutics, the product was acquired by Stiefel Laboratories in 2008 and subsequently became part of the GSK portfolio. Clinical trials demonstrated that the Hyphanox formulation is non-inferior to standard itraconazole capsules for the treatment of toenail fungal infections.
