Overview

Hypochlorous acid is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula HOCl (also written as HClO or ClOH). It is a weak, unstable acid that forms when chlorine dissolves in water and exists in equilibrium with its conjugate base, the hypochlorite ion (ClO−), depending on pH. Hypochlorous acid is a powerful oxidizing agent and serves as the primary disinfection agent in chlorine-based solutions. In biological systems, it is produced by white blood cells via myeloperoxidase to destroy pathogens. Medically, it is used topically for wound care and infection prevention due to its strong antimicrobial properties. Industrially and domestically, it finds extensive use as a disinfectant for surfaces, water treatment, food safety applications, agriculture, veterinary practice, and household cleaning[1][3][4][5].
