Overview

Hypocrellin A is a naturally occurring perylenequinone pigment primarily isolated from the fungus Hypocrella bambusae. It acts as a photosensitizer, generating reactive oxygen species (notably singlet oxygen) upon illumination and thereby exhibiting photodynamic activity. Its mechanisms include photodynamically mediated cytotoxicity, antimicrobial, antifungal, antileishmanial, immunomodulatory, and antitumor effects. Hypocrellin A has demonstrated the ability to inhibit MHC II antigen presentation, enhance ROS production, and induce damage to bacterial and fungal cell walls. Its pharmacological applications are explored primarily in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for infections, cancer, and potentially dermatological conditions such as acne, leveraging its cytotoxicity and photoreactivity[1][4][7][9][10].
