Hypocrellin A is a naturally occurring perylenequinone pigment primarily isolated from the fungus Hypocrella bambusae. It acts as a photosensitizer, generating reactive oxygen species (notably singlet oxygen) upon illumination and thereby exhibiting photodynamic activity. Its mechanisms include photodynamically mediated cytotoxicity, antimicrobial, antifungal, antileishmanial, immunomodulatory, and antitumor effects. Hypocrellin A has demonstrated the ability to inhibit MHC II antigen presentation, enhance ROS production, and induce damage to bacterial and fungal cell walls.
